Vancouver Island University, Health and Science Centre

Nanaimo, British Columbia

Completion Date: 2018
Square Footage: 84,550
Targeting LEED Canada NC Gold

The new Health and Science Centre at Vancouver Island University (VIU) is designed to meet the requirements for accreditation and to continue providing industry relevant and responsive health and science programs in a safe, efficient, and quality learning environment.

As the first phase of a new campus plan that transforms the institution into a university, the building will serve as an important part of the campus circulation network. Building entrances located at each of the primary facades reinforce campus links and support the future campus vision by promoting ease of access for students and staff arriving at the building from the bus loop to the north, parking to the south, and adjacent campus buildings to the east and west.

The building contains both health and science programs at VIU, emphasizing interdisciplinary engagement between departments. Function and program distribution were a key drivers in the building massing, with shared classroom and support spaces located on the lower levels and teaching and offices located on the upper levels. A four-storey atrium provides daylight to interior spaces and separates the office and teaching zones.
